| Kenton Hopkins was enjoying a thriving real estate career in Minneapolis when a buddy invited him to ski Vail. That was in 1973. He’s still here. To say that Kenton fell in love with the Vail Valley is an understatement. "For me, there’s not a day that goes by without my senses being awakened by the natural beauty of this area," he enthuses. Not that he spends all his time amid the wonders of nature. Kenton continued his real estate career joining Vail Associates Real Estate in 1986. He remained with the company's Beaver Creek office when Vail Associates Real Estate merged with Slifer Smith & Frampton in 1994.
For over twenty years Kenton has worked with hundreds of buyers and sellers completing transactions in nearly every development in Beaver Creek and Bachelor Gulch, two of the markets in which he specializes. Kenton’s dedication and enthusiasm is reflected in some impressive statistics. He is constantly among Slifer Smith and Frampton’s top five producing brokers, having successfully transacted over $550,000,000 in sales since 1986. Kenton cites several reasons for his success. First of all he has an intimate understanding of the resort in which he lives and offices. This familiarity and expertise with the community along with his considerable negotiating and contracting skills add unique value when working with both buyers and sellers. Along the way Kenton has aggressively continued his real estate education earning a Masters in Real Estate (MRE) real estates most advanced degree as well as the coveted Certified Residential Specialists (CRS) designation. Kenton is also a Graduate of the Real Estate Institute (GRI).
"I enjoy introducing the mountain lifestyle to clients who aren’t yet familiar with the many joys and options," he says. "I try to pass my love for the mountains on to them." Kenton understands he has many people to thank for his success – from his long list of loyal clients to all of those in the community who support the industry.
While Kenton is appreciative of his success, he in turn supports the industry and the community that have helped him achieve his goals. For example, he is a member of the Urban Land Institute, is on the marketing committee of the Gore Range Natural Science School, is a member of the Central Rockies Leadership board of directors and a member of the Beaver Creek Homeowners Association.
Kenton has been instrumental in the creation, implementation and management of the sales and marketing strategies for some of Vail Valley’s largest development projects including the Chateau, Ironwood, Elkhorn Lodge and Bachelor Springs. Kenton’s broad experience includes market research, from quantitative market analysis to creating marketing surveys and facilitating focus groups. This process ultimately helps define the ideal product scope such as; unit mix, style, size, amenities, pricing, target markets etc. He has also been instrumental in development site selection, valuation and acquisition. Through the design phase of development Kenton has worked hand in hand with architectural firms to help create unique, yet functional floor plans. Kenton has a keen eye for style and quality, which makes his selection of finish materials a valuable asset, adding value to the product, while creating a consistent theme. Kenton is familiar with the approval process and has been successful winning needed approvals from local government and design review committees. Kenton has directed complete marketing campaigns from naming product to the creation of award winning collateral material such as brochures, video, newspaper ads, and direct mail.
One of Kenton's strongest attributes lies in his ability to work one on one with clients. He first listens well to a customer’s needs then understands their motivations, ultimately uncovering then demonstrating clearly how the property satisfies his clients needs. The high level of integrity and business ethics that he employs has allowed Kenton to cultivate significant long-term client relationships.
Kenton has helped draft document packages for real estate developments from sales contracts to articles, declarations and by-laws. He has in depth experience negotiating contracts with buyers and their advisers.
One of the most important phases of real estate is the closing and delivery of the property. Kenton has developed systems that allow these steps to go smoothly for both buyers and sellers.
From 1980 until 1986 Kenton took a leave from Vail to work within the retail securities industry for Piper Jaffray, a highly respected regional brokerage based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As Vice President, his primary responsibility was the profitability of the Denver, Colorado division. During this time Kenton was also a top investment broker. He established a broad based clientele through his expertise in the development of sound investment portfolios and cash management for individuals, businesses and pension profit sharing accounts. He also developed considerable expertise in stock analysis and selection, market timing, fixed income investments and real estate limited partnerships.
Kenton graduated Magna Cum Laude from Regis University. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, emphasis on finance, with a minor in Economics. Kenton attended Harvard University’s, graduate school of design, professional development program. His focus was on real estate development, as well as resort development, planning and design.
As a past certified ski instructor Kenton's winter time recreation continues to be centered around his love for skiing. He enjoys being out with friends either skiing or snowshoeing. From June until November you will again find Kenton outside, when he's not working. He plays golf, mountain bikes, fishes, and is attempting to climb all fifty-four 14,000 ft. peaks in the state
